About the event

Join us for a conversation with David T. Fisher ’69, author of Calvin’s Crusaders in the Wars That Made America, a sweeping and thoughtful historical novel that revisits the American founding through the life of Nathaniel Scudder—physician, militia colonel, and the only signer of the Articles of Confederation to die in combat.
At a moment when debates about America’s origins are often driven more by ideology than history, Calvin’s Crusaders offers a deeper, more complex portrait of the Revolutionary generation. Fisher explores the moral costs of war, the problem of profiteering, and the often-overlooked role of religious conviction in sustaining the revolutionary cause—without sanitizing the darker realities of the era.
The conversation will be moderated by Lachlyn Soper *’09 and will touch on history, faith, moral responsibility, and what gets lost when we flatten the past to fit present arguments.
